Basic Part Creation
This module focuses on the fundamental Feature commands in SolidWorks that are essential for transforming 2D sketches into functional 3D parts. Mastering these five tools allows a beginner to create a wide variety of basic geometric shapes and details.
1. Extrude Boss/Base
Function: Adds material to a 2D sketch by pulling it straight along a specified direction (linear depth).
Concept: This is the most common method for creating the main body of a part, like creating a cube from a square sketch.
Key Settings: Direction (e.g., Blind, Through All, Mid-Plane), and Depth (the distance of the extrusion).
2. Revolve Boss/Base
Function: Adds material by spinning a 2D sketch around a defined central axis.
Concept: Used primarily for creating circular or symmetrical parts like shafts, cones, or turned parts.
Prerequisite: The sketch must contain a construction line or edge to serve as the Axis of Revolution.
3. Extrude Cut / Revolve Cut (The "Cutting" Features)
Function: Removes material from an existing 3D body.
Concept: These are the negative counterparts to the Boss/Base features.
Extrude Cut: Cuts material linearly (e.g., drilling a straight hole, cutting a slot).
Revolve Cut: Cuts material by revolving a sketch around an axis (e.g., cutting a groove or a tapered section on a turned part).
Key Settings: Similar to Boss/Base, but the direction determines where the cut is removed.
4. Fillet
Function: Rounds off sharp edges or corners of a 3D model.
Concept: Used to improve part aesthetics, remove stress concentrations, or match design specifications.
Key Setting: Radius (the curvature of the round).
5. Chamfer
Function: Creates an angled bevel on sharp edges or corners of a 3D model.
Concept: Often used for manufacturing purposes (e.g., ease of assembly) or decorative finish.
Key Settings: Distance-Distance (e.g., 5mm x 5mm) or Distance-Angle (e.g., 5mm at 45°).
