Master the art of seamless data exchange between design, manufacturing, and procurement teams.
The Importance of a Unified Assembly Workflow
In modern engineering, the ability to share complex CAD assemblies across various departments is crucial for minimizing errors and reducing time-to-market. A fragmented workflow leads to version conflicts and costly manufacturing mistakes.
Phase 1: Preparation and Data Cleaning
Before sharing, ensure the assembly is "lean." This involves removing unnecessary internal components or proprietary details that other departments might not need. Use Simplified Representations to improve loading times for non-engineering teams.
Phase 2: Standardizing Formats (STEP, Parasolid, or Native)
Not every department uses the same software. While the design team works in native formats, procurement or marketing might require universal formats like STEP or JT files. Always include a 3D PDF for quick visualization without specialized software.
Phase 3: Centralized Access via PDM/PLM
Avoid sending files via email. Utilize a Product Data Management (PDM) system. This creates a "Single Source of Truth," ensuring that when a design updates, every department sees the latest revision automatically.
Phase 4: Feedback Loops and Revision Control
Implement a structured feedback loop. Using digital markup tools allows the manufacturing team to suggest changes directly on the assembly, which can be tracked and approved by the lead engineer.
